Kirsi Eräranta and Johanna Moisander, Aalto University School of Business: Work Institutionalization of Work-life balance as a management issue – a critical CSR perspective

In this developmental paper, we present preliminary ideas and findings from our study that aims to unfold the process of institutional field transformation through which a social policy issue concerning citizens’ better “work-life reconciliation” was translated from a question of parents’ equal right to paid work and family life to a question of employees’ work-life balance and socially responsible human resources management, in the context of a Nordic welfare state, Finland. Drawing on the literature on Scandinavian Institutionalism and translation, we analyze this process of transformation as a result of deliberate activity of multiple and changing institutional actors as institutional entrepreneurs who pursue public reforms in the field of European social policy. The paper contributes to the literature on ‘gender and corporate social responsibility’, by critically examines examining a process of institutional field transformation through which corporations and firms are given and assume responsibility for protecting and sustaining the care rights of citizen’s in society.
