Elisa Mekler, a former postdoctoral researcher and manager of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) started in her new role as an assistant professor at CS department on 1 August 2019. AALTO DAY ONE 2019-2020

The faculty, staff and students of Aalto University are all invited to celebrate the opening of the academic year on 3 September in Otaniemi campus. Registration opens in August.


Over the last four years, RIOT has been emerged as one of the agile and state of the art operating system for the IoT. This year the RIOT Summit will be held on 5-6 September at Design Factory in Otaniemi campus. The previous Summits were a big success. It’s time to meet again face-to-face!


The Falling Walls Lab is an inspiring opportunity for the next generation of top innovators to present their research in just 3 minutes to their peers, a distinguished jury, and the general public. Apply by 5 September if you are a Bachelor or Master student, PhD candidate, post-doc, young professional or entrepreneur. Falling Walls Finland will be taking place on 19 September at Design Factory in Otaniemi campus.


We will arrange CS Research Day again on 3 October at 12:00-15:00 in CS building. This is your chance to present your research to your colleagues and new students and find out what others are researching! More information will follow closer to the event!


The Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence FCAI is organizing a community event on 21 October to share what we do and to welcome new researchers from Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and VTT to join the FCAI community.

AI DAY 2019

AI Day brings together researchers, companies, students and the public sector involved in the fast-developing field of AI. The event offers a chance for matchmaking, information sharing, and cross-border collaboration. The registration to the event starts in September. AI Day 2019 will be held on 26 November at Dipoli in Otaniemi campus.

Aalto Online Learning call for idea proposals

Aalto Online Learning calling for new idea proposals – DL 21.8. at noon!

Aalto Online Learning, a strategic educational development project, is calling for ideas on online and blended learning. All Aalto people from any field of study are invited to suggest ideas for advancing online learning at Aalto University. We offer support and funding for a variety of ideas related to online and blended learning. Projects can range from developing courses or majors, to creating pedagogical trainings or exploring digital services for learning. 

The deadline for the proposals is on August 21 at noon! More information.

Both Aalto University and the Department of Computer Science will organize several info and training events about the September call, especially during August and September. We will advertise these events in CS News once the schedule is confirmed. The first training event is already next week:

Info event

Academy of Finland staff tour universities and research institutes in Finland to present the Academy's funding opportunities that will open for application in September. An event, having focus on the research fields of natural sciences and engineering, will be arranged in Otaniemi on 27.8.2019. Another event, having focus on the research fields of culture and society, will be arranged in Helsinki on 28.8.2019. In the info events, the funding opportunities, the changes in the application procedure and the contents of the research plan and evaluation criteria will be presented.

  • H2020 Digital Security: Digital security, privacy, data protection and accountability in critical sectors, deadline is 22 August 2019

For its October 2019 grant application round, the Finnish Cultural Foundation has released around EUR 1 million in additional funding earmarked for research concerning the energy market of the future and/or the technology revolution. Applications will be accepted from all fields of science and economics, as well as interdisciplinary projects. The additional grant funding (EUR 1 million) will be awarded to between one and five research projects.

The Cultural Foundation’s October round of applications will be open between 1 and 31 October 2019. All in all, there will be approximately EUR 25 million in grants open for application.
