Learning Outcomes

Sustainable Biomass Processing

The replacement of fossil carbon sources by renewable ones is one of the main global challenges in the near future. Biorefineries are production sites where biomass is converted into energy, fuels, other chemicals and/or materials by using technologies that integrate traditional and modern processes in the best way. Green chemistry and biotechnology are applied, and sustainability in the use of natural resources is assessed in a holistic view.

This major focuses on sustainable biomass processing, production of fuels and chemicals from biomass, and introduces the most relevant chemical and biochemical processes in these applications. The courses of the module include lectured courses as well as individual project work, literature studies and seminar work to support students’ skills in problem solving, and to prepare students for the thesis work.

Students who choose this module for their second year must have basic knowledge of chemistry and/or chemical engineering.

Master’s Thesis  (30 cr)

Master’s thesis in Aalto University is equivalent to 30 ECTS. Aalto University sets the following formal requirements for the Master’s thesis: (i) the topic of the thesis has to be accepted by Aalto University, (ii) the supervisor or co-supervisor of the thesis must be a professor in Aalto University and (iii) the thesis must be assessed at Aalto University. The instructor(s) of the Master’s thesis can be also from industry. The Master’s thesis work is typically done in collaboration with one or more industrial companies.
