This article goes over how you can manually caption your session in the Editor.

We recommend importing automatic captions first, and then editing the the captions given as needed. To learn how to import automatic captions, see the following article.

1. Go to the Editor

  • You can click the edit button by hovering over the video in the folder and clicking edit, or by clicking the pencil icon in the Viewer in the top right-hand corrner.

2. Go to the captions tab.

  • In the editor, there will be several tabs on the left-hand side of the screen. Click the one that says "Captions."

  • You will now be presented with this screen.

3. Begin to add captions

  • In the text box, you can begin typing in the words you want to appear in the caption. When finished, hit enter.

  • Hitting enter will add the caption to the current place in the timeline that you are at in the editor and will look as follows with a time stamp.

4. Edit or Delete the Caption

  • If you made a mistake, want to change the time it appears, hover over the appropriate caption and click the Pencil icon.

  • The following screen will appear. You can edit the time and caption from this screen
  • To delete a caption simply click the Trash Can icon.

5. Publish your changes.

  • Once you have added all the caption you want, click the Publish button in the top right hand corner to show them to your viewers.

Please see this article on end-user styling.

Videos you produce for your classes should be captioned for those with hearing impairments or other disabilities, according to Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This post outlines considerations before creating captions for a video and evaluates several software options and workflows for captioning. The end result will be a video hosted on Panopto that has a full set of properly-synced captions.
