Programmers for Educational Software

The CS department is looking to hire one or two programmers to develop an IDE plugin that will support the department’s introductory programming courses and help thousands of students. DIRECTOR OF HIIT

Aalto University and the University of Helsinki are looking for a proven leader to be the next Director of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT. MENTORING SPACE

Mentoring events are back! Mentoring Space is a weekly event run by Aalto’s computer science department postdocs and PhD students. This informal event allows researchers to share their concerns, issues and questions and learn from each other and the experience of more senior participants. You are welcome to come and talk about motivation concerns, questions about your next career steps. ACRIS is Aalto’s research information system. It is used for automatic annual reporting to the Ministry of Education. Our department’s funding is dependent on this reporting! Therefore, register every publication you have.

Minimum required information:

  • Publications (Add new -> Research output) Check that you have CS department as affiliation and Computer and Information Sciences as ”field of science”
  • Visits abroad (min. 5 days) (Add new -> Activity -> External academic engagement -> Visit abroad) Some travel information is automatically available via HRG system connected to your flight reservations, but you need to update most of these automatic entries.
  • Visits to Aalto University by foreign researchers and teachers (min. 5 days)(Add new ->Activity -> External academic engagement -> Hosting a visitor)
  • Research and art awards (Add new -> Activity -> Awards) 
  • International conferences organized in Finland (Add new -> Activity -> Conference participation)

The final Aalto-wide deadline will be 15th January 2020. But please, start in time and fill in your information as soon as possible!

HPY RESEARCH FOUNDATION GRANTS 2020 - DL 31 January 2020

HPY Research Foundation Grants 2020 call will open on 2 December. The foundation supports research studies of telecommunications technology, studies closely related to telecommunications business or the use of telecommunications. Research studies should be in the areas of technological, business or behavioral sciences. This year the foundation supports doctoral thesis students by awarding grants worth 3,000 euros each.

OSK. HUTTUNEN FELLOWSHIPS - DL 15 January 2020

Osk. Huttunen Foundation and Clare Hall College of Cambridge University offer grants 6 -12 months research visit to Clare Hall College. The grant is for professors and docent-level researchers, and the call opens on 1 December 2019.

ERA-NET CHIST-ERA 2019 JOINT CALL

Pre-announcement for CHIST-ERA call 2019 has been published.

2019 Call on the following themes:

  • Explainable Machine Learning-based Artificial Intelligence
  • Novel Computational Approaches for Environmental Sustainability

Academy budget expected to be around 1 M€ (2-4 projects funded). Call opens in December 2019, with tentative deadline for short proposal on 14 February 2020 and for the full proposal in June 2020.

STRATEGIC RESEARCH COUNCIL - expected opening in December 2019 with DL in mid-January 2020

CS BOARD GAME NIGHT

CS has a board game night every Thursday starting at 18:00 in A2 coffee room

Many games start at 18:00, but if you come by anytime you'll eventually find a game. Just drop by - if you are new someone will help you. Bring some games if you have them, otherwise we have plenty already.

Organizer: contact richard.darst@aalto.fi for questions. Announcements go to the informal-cs mailing list, sign up there (here) to get them. But also realize that this is self-organized: if you don't know what to do, make it up.
