Here you can find information about the Epilog Legend 36EXT laser cutter and how to start using it at the Aalto Fablab.

Follow the steps below otherwise.

  1. Make sure that the ventilation and fume extraction is on.
    1. Turn the rotary timer switch to its maximum position clockwise.
    2. Open the fume extraction valve near the laser cutter.
  2. Turn on the laser cutter and wait till it initialises.
  3. Open the lid of the laser cutter and insert your material.
    1. Make sure that you know the size, type and thickness of the material. 
    2. Consult Laser Cutter Materials list to make sure you can cut it.
  4. Set the origin of the laser cutter.
    1. Activate the red laser marker by pressing the Pointer button on the Epilog laser control panel.
    2. Disable the X/Y stepper motors by pressing the X/Y OFF button and confirm it by pressing the green GO button.
    3. Open the laser cutter lid and move the laser head carefully to match your desired origin position with the red laser pointer.
    4. Confirm the origin by pressing SET HOME. Make sure that the Epilog Laser remembers the origin by pressing RESET.
  5. Prepare your design for cutting in Adobe Illustrator.
    1. Make sure that the document color mode is set to RGB (you can check it under File / Document Color Mode).
    2. Set the color mode to RGB if it is not.
    3. Make sure that the lines that you want to cut are 0.01mm thick.
    4. make sure that the lines that you want to cut are pure black (#000000).
    5. Use pure black fills (#000000) for areas you would like to engrave.
  6. Pro tip: create separate engraving and vector cutting jobs for the laser to avoid weird errors.
  7. To create engraving job for the laser, do the following.
    1. Open print settings via File / Print.
    2. Select the Fablab 1000 print profile.
    3. Click Setup, make sure the Epilog Engraver device is selected and click Preferences.
    4. You should see the Epilog laser driver application now. 
    5. Recommended: Separate cutting from engraving by selecting either only Vector or Raster setting.
    6. Start with Raster and define the Power and Speed settings by using material settings from the Laser Cutter Settings wiki page.
    7. Click OK to confirm.
    8. Click Print to close the Setup dialog.
    9. Click Print once more to close the Print dialog and send the raster job to the laser.
  8. To create a cutting job for the laser, do the following.
    1. Go to File / Print again to set up the cutting job.
    2. Select the Fablab 1000 print profile.
    3. Click Setup and make sure the Epilog Engraver device is selected, then click Preferences.
    4. This time select the Vector setting. 
    5. Define Power, Speed and Frequency settings based on material settings from the Laser Cutter Settings wiki page.
    6. Click OK to confirm.
    7. Click Print to close the Setup dialog.
    8. Click Print again to close the Print dialog and sent the vector cutting job to the laser.
  9. Start engraving (this part has to be done at the laser cutter).
    1. Navigate to the first (Raster) job sent to the laser using the arrow buttons on the Epilog laser cutter.
    2. Hit the green GO button to launch the job.
  10. Start cutting (look at the laser cutter).
    1. Navigate to the cutting job you sent to the laser using the arrow buttons on the Epilog laser cutter.
    2. Hit the green GO button to start the cutting job.

  1. Hi, 

    What is the maximum resolution that we can achieve using this laser cutter? I want to make a very fine pattern on some cutting  material that will be used for making silicon based pattern but I would like to know the maximum resolution of the printer available so that I make the features of the pattern accordingly.
